Acquiring U.S. Residence through the DV Lottery
In 1990, the United States established an immigrant visa programs whereby individuals born abroad in countries determined to be under-represented in the United States can register for possible issuance of an immigrant visa simply based upon having been born in one of the designated countries.
The initial program was entitled the AA-1 program which ended with the 1993 - 1994 registration period. This program for all succeeding years has been re-entitled the DV Lottery.
The Diversity Program imposes two conditions for registration:
- The applicant be from one of the "designated" "low admission countries" as revised annually with each registration period, and
- The applicant possess either a high school education or its equivalent or have accumulated within the past five years at least two years of experience on a job which requires at least two years of training or experience to carry out the duties of the position.
Registration for the DV Lottery is held annually each year for a period of 30 days during which each applicant in entitled to submit a single mail-in application.
